What is Android?
Android is a computer-based operating system developed by Google for cell phones and personal computers. It was first released in July 2008 under the name "Blackberry OS" but later evolved into its current name. In 2005, Google started working on another version of Android called KitKat, which was also named after the company's founder Larry Page. After years of work by different teams inside Google, it finally launched on November 4, 2007. Since then, most Android versions have come with some sort of Android upgrade, while others have been entirely new projects.
How do I know if my phone runs Android? If your device uses one of these features, you likely run Android: A stock device with no software. An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) laptop or desktop running Windows 8 or 10, an emulated smartphone or tablet running iOS 7.1+, and a Samsung Galaxy Note or S8 phone running Android 2.1 or higher. The following criteria are used to determine whether a device meets this definition.
It has Android Nougat (formerly known as Ice Cream Sandwich), formerly known as Symbian OS.
It has at least two major revisions since launch with Android Lollipop, otherwise known as Pie, Oreo, or Marshmallow.
It has a processor that can handle multitasking such as Snapdragon 800 or 1 GHz Pentium Celeron, Quadcore Atom, Intel Core Duo, Intel vPro, AMD Athlon X2 or Pentium Gold Dual core chip (Intel Pentium Gold dual core chipsets are considered more up-to-date than Pentium dual core chipsets).
It must support Internet Explorer 11, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Microsoft Edge, Thunderbird, Hotmail, Outlook Mail or Yahoo mail, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, Myspace, Skype, SMS and UC Browser. Also, it should not be based on any previous form factor Android Phone OS. For example, if installed from Amazon Kindle FireOS 3.0 or newer, it should use the same kernel version as the hardware.
What does Android give us?
Android gives us many conveniences, including apps and games, quick access to maps, call and text services, social networking and email, etc., all through easy access to web browsers and similar websites. Apart from that, there are a number of functionalities like notifications, smart home devices, GPS navigation, camera, Wi-Fi capabilities, Bluetooth connectivity, and so on that we may not need in our daily lives even if we own an Apple product. The list goes on!
How much do I pay?
Although Android comes with free options such as games and data, if your usage exceeds a certain limit, you will be required to purchase some additional licenses. Some manufacturers offer free trials, others are only offering limited trials from the time they enter the market. You are also able to receive them for a set period of time. However, after which, you have to buy a license again. As discussed earlier, if you want an unlocked license, you cannot go longer than six months, regardless of whether it is paid or on contract.
Is Android safe for everyone?
Android is very secure and user friendly, making it easier to navigate around the world around us without being bombarded with advertisements trying to track your whereabouts with various types of cookies and security protocols. Because Android isn't open source, anyone can develop their custom applications using codes. There are thousands of third-party developers who create applications for both Android and iPhone. They are constantly improving their products to stay ahead of the curve and keep things simple. When your device gets updated regularly, chances are high that your applications will be compatible with the latest ones. This means that people who live in countries where English may not speak or have weak internet connections will find it quite difficult to access some information online.
However, because there are over 100 million Android users worldwide, people from other parts of the world who don't speak English are equally as useful as those living within the US and Canada. These non-English speakers can benefit from improved accessibility, especially among low-income populations, and can bring in their skills for companies looking for skilled employees who can build better apps. Aside from that, there are also cases when a programmer needs assistance with code changes that require Android development in addition to providing them with necessary skill sets. This kind of help can ensure that everyone benefits from the use of Android devices instead of solely focusing on building unique and exclusive applications.
